Listening Blog #7 - Week 11/1

This week I chose to listen to A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. This song speaks volumes especially in today's society. When the Black Lives Matter movement began this song became a symbol to people. It is as powerful today, as it was then. Cooke sings with such passion in this song, you can tell this song is personal to him. The lyrics hit hard when you realize the struggles that a man has is affected heavily by the simple color of his skin. The music is beautiful as soon as you hear the instrumental start it gives you literal chills. The trumpets are my favorite part, it almost makes the song more powerful. The audience this song is directed at, is everyone but also people who have been waiting for the system to change. When I went to protest for the BLM movement they played this song and it brought me to tears. The fact that this song is still relevant to our lives today is crazy to me. This song is moving and provides hope that one day a change really is going to come and...

Listening Blog #6 - Week 10/25

This week I wanted to do the song Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles. I have been recently obsessed with this song and the new orchestrated version by Cody Fry. This song is obviously a very legendary song by The Beatles, but the cover hits hard. Back to the og though. This song is amazing and the instruments truly make the song in my opinion. The violin is my favorite part of the song and it's a lot different than anything that had been released at the time. The lyrics talk about the lonely ones in the world and how potentially if Eleanor Rigby and Father Mckenzie had met, maybe they wouldn't have lived and died such lonely people. The lyrics hit more deep when you feel like you are alone and I think that's the key audience of this song. When looking at the lyrics it makes you really appreciate the lyrical geniuses that consisted of The Beatles.  The lyrics and instruments go perfectly with each other to create such an amazing song. This song is definitely a favorite of mine and...

Listening Blog #5 - Week 10/18

The song I chose this week was La Bamba by Ritchie Valens. Now I’d be lying if I said I’d never heard this song before. This song was played in my house growing up all the time. I remember running around the house just singing the words “bamba bamba”. It feels in a way nostalgic for me listening to this song. I love the way this song makes you want to get up and dance. The lyrics translated literally talk about dancing saying, “To dance the Bamba, one needs a little grace”. You really don't have to understand the lyrics to the song for it to make you want dance. The instruments of this song fit into the rock and roll aspect of this section. The guitar is the highlight of the instrumentals but also the beat that flows in with the guitar brings it full circle. The guitar solo that plays towards the end of the song is so dope and I love the way it flows so well with the song. The target audience is definitely people who just want to get up and dance. This song is definitely one of my...

Listening Blog #4 - Week 10/11

For this week's blog post I decided to listen to Have Mercy Baby by The Dominoes. This song is about asking their lover for forgiveness because they lied and cheated on them, but they want them back. The beat of the song is very upbeat and makes you wanna dance around, which is funny because the lyrics of the song alone have such a different vibe. The lyrics are somewhat sad as he begs for “mercy” or forgiveness, but the music is so upbeat it almost makes the lyrics come off as a joke. The vocals are amazing and match the instrumentals so perfectly. I love the saxophone solo that is played in the middle of the song, it almost ties everything together. I feel like the audience of this song would just be people who want to dance and have fun, although the lyrics speak differently. I actually like this genre of music and I have a whole playlist dedicated to this genre or time period of music. I like this song a lot because it has a really fun beat to it and makes me want to go to lik...

Listening Blog #3 - Week 10/4

For this week's blog post I decided that I wanted to listen to The Boswell Sisters, It Don’t Mean A Thing . This song is a roller coaster of feelings in my opinion. It goes from a very upbeat melody when the girls start singing but then later when it's just instrumentals it slows down quite a bit. It goes from a more relaxed song to a super fast song to slow again and then crazy fast after that. It's a good song and I've heard the saying “it don’t mean a thing if you ain't got that swing” before so it made the song feel like it was very familiar to me. The song makes me want to dance around in an old flapper dress, kind of like a scene out of The Great Gatsby. The Boswell sisters' voices blend so well together and I think it matches the instruments in the back perfectly. The target audience is definitely to dance around and like the song says swing. My favorite part of this song was definitely when it went from slow and then picked up pace very fast. It's li...
